Harbor Bridge Closing for Weekend
The Vincent Thomas Bridge, the sole automobile crossing for the main channel of the Los Angeles Harbor, will be closed to traffic from 4 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday because of a retrofitting project.
Drivers should use the Harbor Freeway, Pacific Coast Highway and the Terminal Island Freeway as detours. The bridge connects San Pedro and Terminal Island. All traffic lanes will be closed for workers to upgrade steel structures at both ends of the suspended portion of the bridge.
The work, which began last year, is part of a $26-million project to strengthen the 35-year-old bridge against earthquake damage.
This weekend’s closure is the fourth in a total of 20 such closures planned for the project.
