The City Council and Planning Commission held a joint meeting Tuesday night to discuss what should be built on land within the flight path of the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station after the base closes this summer. The council directed city staff to draw up two options: one for the base becoming a commercial airport and the other for it being converted to other uses. Some residents said they wanted the part of the city within the flight path, Portola Hills South, to be zoned for homes. But city officials are opposed to putting homes in the flight path of an airport.
