BUENA PARK
Nancy Brooks’ second-grade class at James A. Whitaker Elementary School planted the first of 33 trees purchased with pennies as part of an Earth Day celebration Thursday. The class collected 2,350 pennies to buy trees from an Irvine firm that provides low-cost trees to schools.
The students planted the first one behind the playground and will put the rest in front of the school and in the back fields.
