After hundreds of hours of study, a team of five students from North Hollywood High School leaves today for Washington to compete against 53 teams from 38 states in the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl.

North Hollywood placed second in last year’s National Science Bowl, a rapid-fire, game show-style competition that tests students’ knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, calculus, astronomy, trigonometry, earth and physical sciences, computer programming and related current events.

After winning the regional Science Bowl sponsored by the Department of Water and Power, previous teams representing Los Angeles went on to score the best record of any region or state for the national contest, officials said.

Van Nuys High School took the national title in 1995 and Venice High School won in 1996 and 1997. No other region has won more than two titles.

The competition begins Sunday and winners will be announced Monday morning.
