Hudson Showing Endurance

Less than three months ago, Troy Hudson was gearing up for the playoffs playing for Sioux Falls of the Continental Basketball Assn. Now, Hudson is making a run as the Clipper point guard of the future.

With Sherman Douglas sidelined because of a sprained ankle and Darrick Martin and Pooh Richardson on the injured list, Hudson played all 48 minutes in the Clippers’ remarkable game against San Antonio on Monday night. Hudson got stronger as the game progressed, scoring all 11 of his points in the second half when the Clippers cut a a 33-point deficit to one point.

“I wasn’t tired. I always tune myself to be ready to play every minute of every game,” said Hudson, who recently signed a contract to be in the Clipper training camp in the fall. “I work hard in the summer on my conditioning.”

Hudson, who also had eight assists and six rebounds, impressed San Antonio point guard Avery Johnson, who battled Hudson most of the night.

“He really played well, and if he continues to play well and work hard for the rest of the season and this summer,” Johnson said, “he’ll be a great player next year.”

The Clippers have to be hoping not too many general managers around the league are taking notice of Eric Piatkowski’s recent play. With good shooters at a premium around the league, Piatkowski has found his stroke, and his aggressive play on both ends of the floor has given the Clippers a new dimension.

Piatkowski, who will be a free agent this summer, had a rough start but, like last season, is finishing strong. Over his last four games, he has averaged nearly 22 points and been a better defender and rebounder. He scored 27 against the Spurs.

The Clippers have five games remaining and begin a four-game trip Thursday at Sacramento. The team, which will move to the new Staples Center next season, will play its final game ever at the Sports Arena against Seattle to close the season on April 5.
