Town Hall Meeting to Address Overlay
State Sen. Richard Alarcon (D-Sylmar) will convene a town hall meeting in Van Nuys tonight to discuss a proposed area code overlay for the 818 area code.
Under an overlay, new phones would be assigned a new area code and current customers would have to dial 818, even to other numbers within the same area code.
Tonight’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the State Building, 6150 Van Nuys Blvd. Among those expected to attend is Public Utilities Commission member Carl Wood and representatives of Pacific Bell, which supports the overlay. The PUC is scheduled to consider the 818 overlay plan at its Sept. 2 meeting.
Also expected to attend is Assemblyman Wally Knox (D-Los Angeles), who has introduced a bill to rescind a planned overlay for the 310 area code and ban future splits and overlays.
