Mayor Paul Yost and council member Shawn Boyd will compete in a surfing contest at the beach near 1st Street on Saturday. The competition is part of a weekend fund-raiser for the city’s lifeguards and the Surfrider Foundation chapters in Long Beach and Huntington Beach.

There are three contests Saturday and Sunday: a children’s contest, a team challenge and a paddle boat race. Yost and Boyd will participate in the team contest on different teams. Information: (562) 434-2366.
