Clarification on Fire Ant Remedy
* I am writing to clarify a key issue regarding the Aug. 3 article “Success in War With Fire Ants Means Taking Fight to Queen.”
The County of Orange has been using an insect growth regulator ant bait since February, when the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved my plan to control the fire ant on public properties of unincorporated areas of the county.
Several months later, the follow-up use of other materials is part of a comprehensive fire ant control program.
The county has also been a partner with the California Department of Food and Agriculture as it developed a $2.8-million, short-term action plan and a minimum $6-million, long-term statewide action plan for the fire ant.
Department Secretary William J. Lyons Jr. has looked to Orange County as a model program.
