Sixth-Ranked Marina Edges No. 7 Esperanza
Sophomore Cara Chlebicki had four goals and four assists to lead sixth-ranked Marina to a 10-7 victory over No. 7 Esperanza in a Sunset League girls’ water polo game Wednesday at Golden West.
Senior Marissa Nelson scored three goals and sophomore Kendra Shanley had two for the Vikings (15-5, 4-0).
Kim Steele had four goals and six steals to lead Esperanza (14-3, 3-1).
In another Sunset League game:
Fountain Valley 6, Edison 4--Senior Ashley Sellah scored two fourth-quarter goals within a two-minute span to seal the victory for Fountain Valley (13-11, 3-1). Goalkeeper Kathy Chau made nine saves for the Barons.
In the Empire League:
Cypress 5, El Dorado 4--Cypress junior Michelle Slevcove scored the winner with 4 minutes 27 seconds left to play. Cypress’ goalkeeper Courtney Lee had 12 saves. Cypress is 19-4, 3-0.
In the Pacific Coast League:
No. 8 University 18, Estancia 0--Senior Jessica Hylton led University (12-7, 4-0) with four goals and one save as goalkeeper. Starting goalkeeper Amy Hilts made three saves and scored two goals for the Trojans.
Laguna Beach 5, Costa Mesa 4 (sudden death)--Laura Case scored the game-winner 41 seconds into the second overtime period in a man-up situation for host Laguna Beach (14-6, 4-0). Tina and Teresa Codini each had two goals, also for the Artists. Amy Devey scored twice for Costa Mesa (1-3 in league).
In the Sea View League:
No. 1 Irvine 6, Santa Margarita 4--Despite the close score, Irvine never lost control of the game. Emi Umezawa led the Vaqueros (17-2, 4-0) with two goals.
No. 5 Newport Harbor 12, No. 9 El Toro 7--El Toro’s fourth-quarter rally fell short after Newport Harbor had taken a substantial lead in the second and third quarters, outscoring El Toro, 9-2. Jocelyn Manderino and Kyndra Cox had three goals each to lead the Sailors (13-5, 4-0), and are tied with Irvine for first place in the Sea View League. El Toro is 2-8, 2-2.
Corona del Mar 9, Woodbridge 2--Lindsey Daley scored two goals in the third quarter as host Corona del Mar (4-9, 1-3) broke open a close game with four third-quarter goals. Arin Hendrickson had 11 saves for the Sea Kings.
In Garden Grove League girls’ basketball:
Bolsa Grande 28, Rancho Alamitos 25--Senior forward Debby Baeder scored 10 of Bolsa Grande’s 18 points in the second half. She finished with a game-high 17 points.
Pacifica 58, Los Amigos 38-- Pacifica’s Diana Barraras scored 17 points to lead the Mariner victory. Monica Curiel scored 14 points for Los Amigos (8-3, 5-5).
Santiago 43, Garden Grove 37--Stephanie Ruepena scored seven of her 14 points in the fourth quarter to lead Santiago back from a one-point deficit. Ruepena also had 10 rebounds for the second-place Cavaliers (17-7, 8-2).
