Last-Minute Goal Lifts Harvard-Westlake

Lerato Simelane scored on a breakaway in the final minute to lift Harvard-Westlake High to a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame in a Mission League boys’ soccer game Friday at Notre Dame.

Marc Tobias tied the score, 1-1, for the Wolverines (14-8-1, 7-3 in league play) when he converted from just outside the penalty box with eight minutes remaining.

In other boys’ games:

St. Francis 3, Chaminade 2--Andy Burghdorf scored on an assist from Anthony Zoric with 30 seconds left in the second 10-minute overtime period to give the Golden Knights (14-4-5, 7-1-2) a Mission League victory at St. Francis.

The teams were tied, 1-1, after regulation play.

Newbury Park 3, Royal 3--Cristian Guardado’s goal with 10 minutes remaining salvaged a tie for first-place Newbury Park in a Marmonte League game at Royal.

Newbury Park trailed, 3-1, at halftime before Casey Schmidt and Guardado scored.

The Panthers (10-4-6, 6-0-4), who outshot Royal, 23-9, can clinch the league title with one victory in their final two games.

Simi Valley 4, Thousand Oaks 1--Brothers Gabe and Sergio Renes each scored twice for the Pioneers (10-5-6, 4-1-5) in a Marmonte League victory at Simi Valley.

Sergio Renes assisted on one of his brother’s goals and teammate Gabe Renes converted a penalty kick. Andrew Becerra scored for Thousand Oaks.

North Hollywood 3, Poly 2--Theo Arvanites scored on a corner kick in the 56th minute and the Huskies (4-7-1, 4-7-1) edged the Parrots (4-3-5, 4-3-5) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at North Hollywood.

Miguel Luquin and Erick Calvillo scored for Poly.

Grant 1, Sylmar 1--Peter Rodriguez scored with 15 minutes to play off an assist from Carlos Munos and Grant (7-5-8, 4-2-6) rallied for a Valley Pac-8 Conference tie at Sylmar.

GIRLS’ GAMES

North Hollywood 3, Monroe 2--Erin Wade converted a penalty kick in the 75th minute at North Hollywood to lift the Huskies (8-3, 6-2) into a second-place tie with Monroe in the Mid-Valley League.

Karla Cativo and Deniss Lopez scored first-half goals to give North Hollywood a 2-0 lead, but Liz Nemeth converted penalty kicks in each half to tie the score.

North Hollywood was awarded the decisive penalty kick after a hand-ball call against Monroe.

Van Nuys 4, Poly 1--Lori Sievers scored three goals to lead the Wolves (9-2, 7-1) to their seventh consecutive victory in a Mid-Valley League game at Van Nuys.

Sievers, who has 11 goals this season, also assisted on a goal by Ana Beauchamp, who assisted on each of Sievers’ goals.
