Hibbert’s Play Helps LSU Shock No. 1 Tennessee, 72-69

Katrina Hibbert made a three-point play with 11 seconds left and No. 23 Louisiana State upset No. 1 Tennessee, 72-69, Sunday at Baton Rouge, La., ending the Lady Vols’ 31-game winning streak in the Southeastern Conference.

Hibbert’s play came after Chamique Holdsclaw had put Tennessee ahead, 69-67, with 26 seconds left. Hibbert finished 18 points.

LSU (20-6, 10-4) beat a No. 1 team for the first time in school history. Tennessee trailed by as many as 14 point in the first half. Holdsclaw, who scored only two in the first half, had nine of her 17 points in the final 6:34 for the Lady Vols (25-2, 13-1).

“When you go on the road, you have to play great defense,” Tennessee Coach Pat Summitt said. “You have to avoid quick-shooting the ball and you have to play as a team. We didn’t do that.”

No. 2 Purdue 71, Northwestern 62--The Boilermakers (25-1, 16-0 Big Ten) stopped the Wildcats (11-15, 5-11) at Evanston, Ill.

No. 5 Old Dominion 100, Richmond 64--The Lady Monarchs (22-3, 15-0) won their 79th straight Colonial Athletic Assn. game in routing the Spiders (13-12, 10-5) at Norfolk, Va.

No. 8 Duke 88, No. 14 North Carolina 78--Michele VanGorp scored 21 points as the Blue Devils (23-5, 15-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) defeated the Tar Heels (24-6, 11-5) at Durham, N.C.

No. 10 Virginia Tech 66, George Washington 64--Tere Williams scored 20 points at Blacksburg, Va., as the Hokies (25-1, 15-1 ACC) defeated the Colonials (18-8, 12-4).

No. 11 Texas Tech 75, Nebraska 62--Rene Hanebutt scored a career-high 33 points as the Red Raiders (23-3, 12-2 Big 12) beat the Cornhuskers (17-10, 6-8) at Lincoln, Neb.

No. 14 Georgia 98, Arkansas 82--Twin sisters Coco and Kelly Miller scored 24 and 18 points, respectively, as the Bulldogs (21-5, 9-5 SEC) beat the Razorbacks (15-13, 5-9) at Athens, Ga.

No. 17 Virginia 73, Florida State 55--Coach Debbie Ryan earned her 500th victory as the Cavaliers (19-7, 12-4 ACC) beat the Seminoles (7-19, 2-14) at Charlottesville, Va.

No. 16 Penn State 77, Ohio State 62--Lisa Shepherd had 24 points for the Nittany Lions (20-6, 12-4 Big Ten), who beat the Buckeyes (16-10, 9-7) at Columbus, Ohio.

No. 18 Oregon 82, Arizona 76--Shaquala Williams had 19 points as the Ducks (22-4, 13-2) beat the Sun Devils (14-9, 9-5) at Eugene, Ore.

No. 20 UC Santa Barbara 84, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo 60--The Gauchos (21-3, 13-0 Big West) won their 16th straight game in routing the Mustangs (8-16, 2-11) at San Luis Obispo.

Mississippi 86, No. 22 Auburn 77--Tarsha Bethley had 26 points to lead the Rebels (15-11, 6-8 SEC) past the Tigers (19-7, 8-6) at Oxford, Miss.

No. 25 Alabama 102, Vanderbilt 59--The Crimson Tide (17-9, 7-7 SEC) beat the Commodores (13-13, 6-8) at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Lisa Hutchens, coach of NAIA Division I Union University, was found dead at her home in Jackson, Tenn., of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. Hutchens, 37, had failed to show up for the team’s scheduled departure for its next game. Union was ranked second in the NAIA in last week’s Associated Press poll.
