Goaltenders Tie Up Stars, Avalanche in Elite Battle

Patrick Roy of the Colorado Avalanche and Ed Belfour of the Dallas Stars were outstanding as two of the best teams in the NHL played to a 1-1 tie Sunday at Dallas.

The Avalanche’s Chris Drury and the Stars’ Brett Hull were the only players to score.

Roy, playing despite an injury to his left hamstring, stopped 23 shots, including two in overtime as Dallas swarmed the Avalanche goal but couldn’t score.

Belfour turned away 17 shots, none in overtime.

Dallas lost defenseman Darryl Sydor in the first period because of a left knee injury suffered in a mid-ice collision with Stephane Yelle. The extent of the injury will be determined today.

New York Rangers 2, Edmonton 1--Eric Lacroix scored his first goal of the season 45 seconds into overtime to give the Rangers a victory at Edmonton.

Ranger goaltender Mike Richter stopped 39 shots, many from close range.

The game featured only four minor penalties, three in the first period.

Philadelphia 2, Pittsburgh 1--Eric Lindros scored his 34th goal and John LeClair had two assists as the Flyers snapped out of their February funk at Philadelphia.

The Flyers, who had lost four of their previous six games, held Jaromir Jagr without a point. The Penguins lost their third in a row after a 10-game winning streak and have dropped nine in a row in Philadelphia.

Detroit 4, Buffalo 4--Vyacheslav Kozlov’s hat-trick goal in the third period gave the Red Wings a tie at Buffalo, N.Y.

Kozlov’s shot from the top of the faceoff circle midway through the third period deflected off defenseman James Patrick’s stick and allowed Kozlov to finish with a goal in each period.

Kozlov nearly won it when his shot hit the crossbar as the Red Wings peppered Buffalo goaltender Dwayne Roloson with seven shots in overtime.

Dominik Hasek remained sidelined because of a strained groin suffered against Toronto on Wednesday and will be reevaluated today.

Carolina 4, New York Islanders 1--The Hurricanes scored three goals in the opening 18 minutes at Greensboro, N.C.

Ray Sheppard scored twice, including an empty-netter with nine seconds left, and Keith Primeau scored once for the Southeast Division-leading Hurricanes, who ended the Islanders’ bid for their first five-game unbeaten streak in 13 months.

Boston 6, Chicago 3--Dmitri Khristich scored three goals as the Bruins ended a three-game losing streak at Chicago.

The Blackhawks, 2-10-1 in their last 13 games, slipped 19 games under .500 for the first time since 1956-57.
