Edison Tops Marina After Furious Rally
Trailing by nine points with 4 1/2 minutes remaining, fourth-ranked Edison turned in an outstanding defensive performance to get a 45-42 victory over second-ranked Marina in a Sunset League opener Thursday.
Edison (12-4, 1-0) outscored the Vikings, 14-2, to close out the game. Along with the defense, free-throw shooting and offensive rebounding played a big role in the final minute.
Allison Libeu made the first of two free throws with about 40 seconds remaining and Michelle Zylstra put back the offensive rebound to tie the game at 42-42.
The Chargers’ defense held, then Libeu made another free throw and Edison again retained possession after Libeu missed the second attempt. Zylstra, who scored 14 points, converted two more free throws with 11 seconds remaining.
Edison made 18 of 24 free throws, Marina 10 of 14.
It’s the second straight loss for Marina (14-2, 0-1).
