Senators Get First Sweep of Red Wings
The Ottawa Senators defeated the Detroit Red Wings for the second time in five days, beating the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions, 4-1, Sunday in front of a sellout crowd of 18,500 at Kanata, Canada.
It’s the first time Ottawa has beaten Detroit at home since March 24, 1994, and the first time the 7-year-old Senators have swept their two-game series from the Red Wings.
“It’s team schizophrenia,” Detroit forward Darren McCarty said of the Wings, 3-6-1 in their last 10 games.
Ottawa (21-13-5) extended its unbeaten streak to eight games (6-0-2).
Colorado 3, Chicago 2--Claude Lemieux scored with 1:29 left in overtime to give the Avalanche a victory over the Blackhawks at Chicago.
Colorado’s Stephane Yelle had tied it with 3:24 left in the third period.
Vancouver 2, Dallas 0--Dave Scatchard and Harry York scored third-period goals and Corey Hirsch stopped 13 shots at Vancouver as the Canucks ended an eight-game winless streak and handed the Stars their second consecutive loss following a 15-game unbeaten streak.
New York Rangers 5, Tampa Bay 2--John MacLean contributed a penalty shot, the second of his career, during the Rangers’ three-goal first period in their victory over the Lightning at New York.
McLean remembered his first penalty shot, on Feb. 27, 1997. He scored it against Buffalo’s Dominik Hasek, the NHL’s two-time MVP, and it came on the day his John was born.
Florida 2, Calgary 1--Rob Niedermayer and Ray Whitney scored less than two minutes apart in the third period as the Panthers rallied to beat the Flames at Calgary.
