3 Teachers Named to Special Program
Three teachers in the Ocean View Elementary School District have been selected to participate in a program that emphasizes hands-on instruction for students in the primary grades.
Tierra Vista School teachers Helen Faul and Kiyoko Moreno and Laguna Vista teacher Carl Lapolla will each receive a $950 stipend from the Early Intervention for School Success program.
In the next four months, the teachers will design and test teaching methods--such as journal writing and sentence-building activities--on small groups of students in selected age groups.
Getting parents more involved and visiting other classrooms to gather ideas are also part of the program.
“This is hands-on learning, not publisher-driven. It’s finding out what a student needs. It’s an effective program that benefits all children whether they are gifted or at-risk,” said Charlene MacDonald, a program specialist.
The teachers will also keep portfolios of student achievements and their individual learning styles.
The state-funded program is administered by the Orange County Office of Education.
