Moorpark Gets Past Westlake
Moorpark High was down early but rallied to defeat Westlake, 62-54, in a Marmonte League girls’ basketball game Wednesday at Moopark.
Damaris Hinojosa had 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists and Moorpark came back from a six-point deficit in the second quarter.
Cathleen Leaver scored 10 of her 14 points in the second quarter for Moorpark (15-1, 4-0 in league play), ranked No. 3 in the region by The Times.
Tawny Thorp scored 16 points for Westlake (6-9, 1-2).
North Hollywood 91, Canoga Park 32--Markia Derby scored 11 of her 21 points in the first quarter and had six steals for the Huskies (11-5) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Canoga Park.
Tashean Thomas contributed 16 points and 11 steals as North Hollywood (11-5) built a 50-18 halftime lead.
Elizabeth Hernandez scored 20 points for Canoga Park (1-6).
Van Nuys 43, Poly 42--Jackie Chiang made two free throws with 37 seconds to play and the Wolves won a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Van Nuys.
LaTaneka Henderson had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Van Nuys (3-8, 1-0).
Grant 52, Sylmar 38--Sophomore Alexis Weatherspoon scored 16 points and the Lancers won a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.
Natalie Gabor contributed 13 points and sophomore Krystal Clay added 12 points and had 16 rebounds for Grant (9-7, 1-0).
Grant, which was playing its first game since Dec. 26, took a 16-7 lead.
San Fernando 54, Kennedy 51--Corina Velazquez scored 14 points and the Tigers, who trailed by 10 points at the end of the third quarter, won a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando.
San Fernando (3-10, 1-0) outscored Kennedy, 22-9, during the last eight minutes.
Taft 51, Birmingham 46--Lisa Hawkins had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Toreadors (8-4) in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Birmingham.
Birmingham made only six of its 24 first-half shots, but rallied with a 21-point fourth quarter.
