Iacenda Planning New Mexico Transfer
Ted Iacenda, the record-setting fullback from Hart High who left USC after last season, plans to transfer to New Mexico and will be eligible immediately next season after receiving a waiver of the one-year residency requirement from the NCAA, his father said.
Iacenda requested a waiver for his transfer because of the emotional hardship resulting from a rape charge brought by a former girlfriend that was later dismissed. USC would not release him to a Pacific 10 school or other scheduled opponent, said Andy Iacenda, the player’s father.
Iacenda started six games for USC as a redshirt sophomore, rushing eight times for 38 yards and catching six passes for 36 yards but left the team before its appearance in the Sun Bowl.
Iacenda will have two years of eligibility at New Mexico, a team coached by former UCLA assistant Rocky Long, with former Jim Fenwick, former coach at Cal State Northridge, as offensive coordinator.
“I’m excited,” Iacenda said. “I held my breath waiting [for the waiver]. I probably was going to have to go I-AA if it didn’t come through.”
Sherdrick Bonner won’t be able to say he played in a Super Bowl, but at least the former Cal State Northridge quarterback can say he practiced for one.
Bonner, who played for Northridge from 1987-90, has been a member of the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad since Nov. 25.
Bonner played for the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League the last six seasons and was selected most valuable player of the 1994 Arena Bowl in Orlando, Fla.
Reggie Kinlaw, an All-Mission League defensive end from Alemany, has committed to Nevada.
Teammate Bryson Atkins, a safety, is visiting Portland State this weekend.
Linebacker Scott Hunt, a three-time All-Foothill League honoree from Hart, has committed to Utah State. He had 109 tackles this season.
