Davison Brothers Win Titles
Mission Viejo brothers James and Scott Davison took the top two spots--and each won titles--in the United States Open Water National 10K Swimming Championships at Newport Beach Saturday.
James, 19, a member of the 1999 U.S. national open water team who swims for the Mission Viejo Nadadores, won the race in 2 hours 1 minute 47 seconds. Scott, 16, a junior at Mission Viejo High, was second over in 2:05:32 and won the 18-and-under title.
Jennifer McLeod, 24, who also trains with the Nadadores and is a U.S. national team member, won the women’s event in 2:13:11. Susan Heim of Antioch, Calif., the only other woman to compete, finished in 2:14:07.
GOLF
* James Oh of Lakewood shot two-under-par 70 to win the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions by one shot Saturday at the Ohio State University Scarlet Golf Course.
Oh finished at 283. Third-round leader Ron Won of Irvine, who shot 73, tied David Oh of Cerritos and Hunter Mahan of McKinney, Texas, for second at 284.
In the girls’ division, Naree Wongluekiet of Bradenton, Fla., survived a double bogey on the 18th hole to claim a two-shot victory over Angela Rho of Fullerton (71) and Virada Nirapathpongporn (75) of Thailand.
BADMINTON
Charlie Hsu of Manhattan Beach defeated Emmanuel Pun of Cupertino, Calif., 15-11, 15-13, in the boys’ 10-and-under singles title at the U.S. Junior National Badminton Championships at the Orange County Badminton Club.
Samantha Jinadasa of Long Beach won the 12-and-under girls’ singles division.
DIVING
* Derek Starks of the Mission Viejo Nadadores finished third in the boys’ 14-and-15 one-meter competition at the U.S. Diving Junior Regionals in Tucson.
Starks, already qualified in the three-meter for the Zone Championships to be held in Beaverton, Ore., July 23-25, qualified in the one-meter event.
