Francisco Stanley
Re “TV Star Is Killed in Brazen Attack That Shocks Mexico,” June 8: Anyone who has lived in Mexico knew him. A man who tried to make life bearable for millions of people in a country overwhelmed by violence and corruption. I was shocked to hear about the death of Mexican comedian and show host Francisco “Paco” Stanley, gunned down in the streets of Mexico City.
Who will be next? Mexico’s ruling party (PRI) has had 70 years to make things better and has failed terribly. Obviously things have to change, but when?

The assassination of Stanley was a terrible thing. But how he was murdered demonstrates the ineffectiveness of gun control on the people who commit crime. According to news releases, he was killed by semiautomatic gunfire. Mexico has about the toughest gun laws as you can find anywhere. It is against the law for anyone in Mexico to have that type of firearm unless they are police or military.
The current majority in the California Legislature is going hog wild with anti-gun bills that, when passed, will only serve to make criminals out of law-abiding citizens. They will also be just as ineffective in controlling crime as the laws in Mexico.
