SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO
Mission San Juan Capistrano will receive $1 million from the state budget--signed Tuesday by Gov. Gray Davis--for preservation of the Great Stone Church. About $2 million has been raised and spent on internal structural support for the church--reduced to ruins by a massive earthquake in 1812--but an estimated $2.6 million is needed to complete work on the sanctuary dome, the sacristy and another dome. Assemblywoman Patricia Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) and state Sen. Bill Morrow (R-Oceanside) submitted a $7.5-million budget request. The Legislature budgeted $2 million, which Davis cut in half.
