Tulsa Coach Gains Suitors

Baylor and San Diego State have asked permission to talk to Tulsa Coach Bill Self about their coaching vacancies.

Baylor is replacing Harry Miller, who resigned following a 6-24 season. San Diego State Coach Fred Trenkle announced his resignation before the end of a 4-22 season.

The schools asked Athletic Director Judy MacLeod for permission to talk to Self, who is 42-22 in two seasons at Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane lost to Duke on Sunday in the NCAA East Regional.

“I would suspect that those schools would get in contact with me by phone,” Self said in Tulsa, Okla. “If that does occur, I’ll certainly talk to them by phone, but by no means am I planning on taking a trip to either place right now.”

Auburn’s Cliff Ellis was voted college basketball coach of the year by the U.S Basketball Writers Assn. He will receive the Henry Iba Award.

Ellis coached Auburn (29-3) to its first Southeastern Conference championship since 1960.

Texas El Paso Coach Don Haskins was in stable condition after a pacemaker was implanted next to his heart. “His condition is stable and everything went well,” said Dr. Felice K. Bruno. Haskins, 69, was expected to remain hospitalized for several days.

The men’s tournament may not be keeping up with last year’s pace, but the women are doing just fine.

While CBS’ men’s ratings are down 4% through the first two rounds, ESPN’s coverage of the women’s tournament is up on both of its channels.

ESPN2 posted a .44 for the eight games broadcast during the initial two rounds, a 10% increase from a .40 last year.

The two games on ESPN have shown a 6% increase, from a .89 last season to a .92.

Even with several blowouts, the men’s tournament posted a 5.4 overnight rating and a 12 share through the first two rounds of action--down only 4% from last year’s 5.6 overnight rating and a 13 share.

Delaware State fired Jimmy DuBose as coach after he led the Hornets to two straight losing seasons.

DuBose, 37, compiled a 17-32 record in two seasons at the school, including an 8-19 record this season.
