Zohrabi Leads Westlake Comeback
Narbe Zohrabi’s comeback victory over highly ranked Adrian Mardyks pushed Westlake High past Rio Mesa on games, 76-73, after the teams tied, 9-9, in a nonleague boys’ tennis match Tuesday at North Ranch Country Club.
The score was tied, 3-3, after the first round of round-robin play and 6-6 after the second round.
Going into the final set--between Zohrabi and Mardyks--Rio Mesa had a 9-8 edge.
Mardyks, a freshman ranked No. 7 in Southern California in the boys’ 14 division by the U.S. Tennis Assn., took a 4-1 lead.
But Zohrabi, a junior playing at No. 2 singles in place of injured Alex Yaftali, won the last five games to take the set and secure the victory for Westlake (6-0), ranked second in the Southern Section Division III.
Zohrabi is ranked No. 47 in boys’ 16s.
“I thought it was a test,” Coach Bernard Kuai of Westlake said. “I thought we were just fortunate to win without our full lineup.”
Westlake’s No. 1 doubles team of Mike Horak and Billy Corso swept three sets, but Rio Mesa (5-1) stayed close with a sweep at No. 1 singles by Quinn Borchard.
