Fed Cup Venue Changed

The Fed Cup tennis match between the United States and Croatia, scheduled to be played in Zagreb, Croatia, next month, will be moved because of the bombardment of nearby Yugoslavia and instability in the region, according to Judy Levering, United States Tennis Assn. president.

“I had said all along, if there was anything, any bombing, that I was not comfortable taking a team over there,” Levering said Friday.

The alternate site probably will be determined Monday by the International Tennis Federation, Levering said. There are at least two possible sites: Hamburg, Germany, or a U.S. city.

If it is moved to the United States, then Croatia would host the next two matches against the Americans.

A switch to the United States might lead Monica Seles to change her mind about playing. She was born in Novi Sad, one of the targets in the NATO operation, and had declined to join the U.S. team for the match in Zagreb April 17-18.

Second-ranked Lindsay Davenport of Newport Beach is scheduled to play. Others who may are Chanda Rubin, Mary Joe Fernandez and Lisa Raymond. The United States lost to Spain last year in the semifinals.

The unstable political situation in the Balkans has prompted other sports to adjust as well. Earlier this week, European soccer’s governing body, UEFA, postponed three European Championship matches in Yugoslavia and Macedonia.
