Man Charged in Fatal Stabbing of His Mother
ALHAMBRA — A 29-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his mother last week at their Alhambra home was charged with murder Tuesday, the district attorney’s office said.
Andrew Akimoto pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in a Los Angeles courtroom Tuesday afternoon and is being held in the Central Jail on $1 million bail, said district attorney’s spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons.
His preliminary hearing is set for April 9.
Akimoto, whom authorities and acquaintances said suffers from a mental impairment, used a knife, fork and scissors to repeatedly stab his 50-year-old mother, Jolene, last Thursday, Gibbons said.
Akimoto’s husband found her body when he arrived home that evening. The son was arrested the next morning after he initially told investigators that a group of gang members broke into the house and committed the crime, police said.
