Wong, Kuo Defend Badminton Title

Kirsten Wong and Michelle Kuo of Cypress defended their Empire League badminton championship in girls’ doubles with a 15-5, 15-1 victory Wednesday at the Orange County Badminton Club.

Loara’s Sothea Kiet won the boys’ singles title with a 17-16, 15-17, 15-8 victory and Magnolia’s Jennifer Cabuhat won the girls’ singles title with an 11-6, 11-5 victory.

In Century League golf:

Baum wins individual title--Canyon’s Scooter Baum shot 14-over-par 156 in the 36-hole final at Strawberry Farms to edge Ed McGlasson of El Modena (157). Baum and McGlasson advance to the Southern Section individual tournament May 17 at Desert Willow in Palm Springs.

Villa Park’s Zach Cohn (158) and Garrett Hurley (160) and Foothill’s Kevin Davis (160) also advanced.

In the Olympic League:

Amen wins--Matt Amen of Orange Lutheran shot seven-over 224 in the three-day league final. Amen, Jimmy Freeman of St. Margaret’s and Cassiday Traub of Cerritos Valley Christian advance to the Southern Section individuals. Freeman shot 224 and Traub shot 236 at Los Serranos.

In the Olympic League boys’ track and field finals:

Holland sets shot put record--Whittier Christian sophomore Steve Holland set a league shot put record with a mark of 51 feet 11 1/2 inches at Brea Olinda. Holland’s mark breaks the previous record of 49-9 set by Brethren Christian’s Brian Polin in 1986.

In Garden Grove League boys’ volleyball:

La Quinta 3, Garden Grove 1--Senior outside hitter Milos Obradovic led La Quinta (10-5, 8-4) with 23 kills. Senior Ming Li had 17 kills in the 15-9, 8-15, 15-10, 15-11 victory.

In the Golden West League:

No. 5 Servite 3, Santa Ana 0--Jordan O’Brien had 10 kills to lead Servite (19-2, 10-0) to its second consecutive league title with a 15-2, 15-4, 15-7 victory. Santa Ana finishes 11-7, 4-6.

Tustin 3, Westminster 0--Kevin Kowalski had 15 kills and William Diep 13 for the visiting Tillers (6-4, 7-7) in the 15-8, 15-6, 15-10 victory.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 3, Aliso Niguel 0--B.J. Lightvote had 33 kills for host Costa Mesa (10-4, 6-4), which won, 15-10, 15-9, 15-8.

In the South Coast League:

No. 7 Mater Dei 3, Dana Hills 0--Senior outside hitter Patrick Duchene led Mater Dei (13-2, 8-1) with 21 kills in the 15-13, 15-12, 15-9 victory.

No. 8 Capistrano Valley 3, Trabuco Hills 0--Kevin France and Drew Carson each had 10 kills as the Cougars (10-3, 8-1) won 15-5, 15-5, 15-13.
