Ban Sought on Inflatable Ad Figures, Signs
LOS ANGELES — Godzilla and King Kong should be banished from atop Los Angeles car dealerships and grocery stores, the City Council agreed Tuesday, saying the proliferation of large inflatable figures--an advertising gimmick--makes the city look tacky.
The council asked the city attorney’s office to draft an ordinance that would prohibit the use of inflatable advertising figures and signs, including giant balloons, intended to draw attention to businesses.
“They are a visual blight,” said Richard Holguin, executive officer of the city Building and Safety Department.
The ban on inflatable figures and balloons would be part of a wider proposed sign ordinance. If approved, the new rules would cut the window area that can be covered by temporary business signs from 25% to 10%.
