Harvard-Westlake Seeded No. 1
Harvard-Westlake High has earned a first-round bye in the Southern Section Division II boys’ tennis playoffs that begin next week.
The Wolverines (17-3), ranked No. 2 in Division II, have moved up after winning consecutive Division III titles the last two seasons. They will open May 20 against the winner of Huntington Beach Edison and Aliso Niguel.
In first-round matches Tuesday, Pacific View League champion Rio Mesa hosts Santa Maria Righetti and Foothill League champion Burbank hosts Lancaster. Marmonte League runner-up Thousand Oaks travels to Walnut and Simi Valley plays at Burbank.
In Division I openers, Camarillo travels to Quartz Hill and Hoover plays the winner of a wild-card match between Oxnard and Arroyo Grande. Wild-card matches are Friday, when Santa Monica plays at Valencia and Glendale is at Palmdale.
In Division III, Marmonte champion Westlake hosts Bellflower, Agoura is at El Monte and Burroughs is at San Marcos.
In Division IV, Calabasas hosts Ridgecrest Burroughs and La Canada plays at Westminster La Quinta.
* Tri-Valley League finals--Oak Park senior Joey Edelberg (45-2) defeated Mike Marquez of host St. Bonaventure, 6-1, 6-2, to win the singles title for the third consecutive season.
* Foothill League finals--Jesse Ferlianto of Hart defeated Corey Moore of Valencia, 6-0, 6-2, to win the singles championship at Cal State Northridge.
Drew Simmons and Eugene Shin of Burbank won the doubles championship with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Andrew Davidson and Todd Castagna of Hart.
BASEBALL
* Agoura outfielder Michael Falco, who ranks among region leaders with a .545 batting average, 13 home runs and 42 runs batted in, will not play the rest of the season because of a sprained right ankle.

Falco, who has signed with Pepperdine, has private workouts scheduled with four major leagues teams before the amatuer draft in June.
* Shane Miranda, an infielder at Camarillo who’s batting .400 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs, has committed to UCLA.
Miranda plans to sign on Thursday. He will play catcher for the Bruins, who earlier signed pitcher Mike Kunes of Chatsworth. Also, former Chaminade catcher Ryan Hamill, a sophomore at Nevada-Las Vegas, is expected to transfer to UCLA this fall.
TRACK AND FIELD
* Amanda Armstrong of Thousand Oaks, a five-time Marmonte League champion in track and cross-country, has signed with UC Irvine.
Armstrong, who won the 800 and 1,600 meters in the league finals on Friday, has bests of 2:18.23 in the 800 and 5:09.92 in the 1,600.
FOOTBALL
* The High Desert Football Coaches Assn. is holding its annual combine on May 20 at Quartz Hill High.
The combine, which features juniors, is conducted before college coaches.
The HDFCA is holding its senior all-star game on June 12 at Palmdale High.
