University’s Gagnet Sets Record at Diving Final
Sophomore Louie Gagnet of University High set a Southern Section Division II championship diving record with 589.60 points Wednesday at the Claremont McKenna Aquatics Complex in Claremont.
Gagnet was the runner-up last season when Aliso Niguel’s Lee Brennan set the previous record of 565.05. Gagnet earned four perfect scores of 10 for his fifth dive, a 2 1/2 somersault tuck.
Robbie Quinn of Laguna Hills (535.20) was second.
In the girls’ competition, Cypress junior Takako Nabeshema finished second after a poor dive in the next-to-last round.
Nabeshema led until low scores on her 10th dive enabled Kristin Littell of Chino Don Lugo to overtake her. Nabeshema finished with 459.65 points, behind Littell’s winning total of 474.15.
In Empire League baseball:
No. 4 El Dorado 7, Cypress 5--Dan Franklin hit his third grand slam of the season for the league champion Golden Hawks (20-5, 13-1).
In the Pacific Coast League:
University 10, Laguna Beach 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Orion Ledesma hit a three-run home run for league champion University (14-11-1, 12-2-1).
Costa Mesa 11, Aliso Niguel 3--Ruben Mancilla hit his school single-season record eighth home run and Josh Little’s two-run home run gave him a school single-season record 36 runs batted in for visiting Costa Mesa (14-8-1, 10-4-1).
In the South Coast League:
Kent wins second title--Brian Kent of Dana Hills won his second consecutive league championship, defeating teammate Javier Carillo in a rematch of last year’s final, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.
