Chapman Opens Softball Finals With Victory

Linsey Buendia gave up three hits and struck out seven as Chapman defeated Ithaca (N.Y.), 5-0, in the first round of the NCAA Division III softball finals Friday at Eau Claire, Wis.

Designated hitter Molly Beckett went two for two with two RBIs for the Panthers. Senior first baseman Stephanie Carew added to the Panther victory by going two for three with a double and two runs scored. Only one of Chapman’s runs was earned.

In the Division I softball regionals:

CS Fullerton 2, Texas A&M; 1--Dara Marzolo (two for three) and Yasmin Mossadeghi (one for three) each had RBIs for the Titans in the first inning. Amy Vining hit a home run in the seventh inning for Texas A&M; (41-21). Christy Robitaille struck out two and walked one to earn the victory for CS Fullerton (36-27), which plays host Washington today.

Long Beach State 8, Southern 0 (5, mercy)--Freshman third baseman Christina Zepeda went one for three with two RBIs and three runs scored for Long Beach State (32-13).

UCLA 14, Creighton 0--Julie Adams, a former Cypress High standout, hit two home runs for the second consecutive game, leading top-seeded UCLA (57-6) at UCLA.

Amanda Freed, a former Pacifica star, struck out a career-high 11, holding Creighton to four hits.

At the NCAA Division I men’s golf West Regional:

Quinney takes lead--Arizona State’s Jeff Quinney shot two-under-par 70 to take the individual lead at five-under 139 after two rounds at Tucson National in Arizona.

Quinney is two strokes ahead of Brigham Young’s Billy Harvey, Nevada Las Vegas’ Michael Kirk and San Diego State’s James Stewart. First-round leader Jose Garrido of BYU shot 75 and is four shots back.

Arizona State’s Jin Park, formerly of Sunny Hills High, shot 71 and is tied for 20th at three-over 147. The Sun Devils lead the team competition at five-under, six strokes ahead of Nevada Las Vegas and BYU.

UCLA’s Jeff McGraw, formerly of Servite, shot par 72 and is also tied for 20th. UNLV’s Chris Berry, formerly of Esperanza, shot 73 and is at five-over 149. UC Irvine senior Mike Lawrence shot seven-over 79 and fell to 64th.

At the NCAA women’s golf championships:

Rosales trails--Defending champion Jennifer Rosales of USC shot a four-over-par 75 and is in fourth place, nine shots behind leader Grace Park of Arizona State, heading into the final round at Tulsa, Okla.

Duke is eight shots ahead of Arizona State and Georgia in the team competition.
