Legislator to Tour Sunshine Landfill
Assemblyman Scott Wildman (D-Los Angeles), who has asked the state health officials to investigate possible health risks of expanding Sunshine Canyon Landfill, plans to take a tour of the dump site on Wednesday to hear the position of Browning-Ferris Industries.
Wildman heads a legislative audit committee. BFI officials, who maintain that the landfill is not a health threat to surrounding communities, invited the assemblyman to tour the site and see for himself what they plan, an aide said.
“We need to know if it’s safe,” said a spokesperson for Wildman. “We don’t know that.”
State Sen. Richard Alarcon (D-Sylmar) may also attend Wednesday’s tour.
The expansion comes back to the City Council on Dec. 8 for a final vote.
