CITY SECTION FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Montes Helps San Fernando Stay Unbeaten, 21-11
Jose Montes caught two touchdown passes and San Fernando relied on its stingy defense to defeat Birmingham, 21-11, in a nonleague game Friday night at San Fernando.
Montes, who caught five passes for 123 yards, teamed with Thomas Hoohuli on a 30-yard touchdown pass with 6:55 left in the first quarter.
Montes took a screen pass from reserve quarterback Angel Delgado and raced 34 yards with 4:02 to play for the final score.
Hoohuli completed 10 of 18 passes for 154 yards, including two touchdowns, but left the game with a bruised knee late in the second quarter.
San Fernando (4-0) held the Patriots (1-3) to four yards and no first downs in the first half.
The Tigers limited Birmingham to minus-six yards rushing, although the Patriots finished with 109 yards total.
Birmingham cut the deficit to 13-3 following John Hall’s 47-yard field goal with 4:25 left in the third quarter.
Scott Jensen connected with Kevin McCleary on a one-yad scoring pass with 4:02 to play.
Bobby Stanley had 166 yards in 32 carries and Gerardo Rubi caught five passes for 75 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown play from Hoohuli late in the first quarter.
