Brooks Resigns as Griffin Coach
Steve Brooks resigned Friday as coach of the Los Alamitos High boys’ basketball and volleyball teams, a move school officials said will not stop them from continuing to investigate the alleged mishandling of basketball funds.
Brooks, who coached basketball for 18 seasons and volleyball for 19 seasons at Los Alamitos, is leaving “for family and personal issues,” vice principal Jerry Halpin said. Calls to Brooks at school and home Friday were not returned.
Halpin has headed the school’s four-month probe into the handling of basketball funds. A county basketball coach, who asked not to be identified, said Halpin asked him to provide financial documents and copies of canceled checks for participation in basketball-related events run by Brooks at Los Alamitos, including a tournament last year.

Marina High named Butch Fredlow coach of its girls’ basketball team, Athletic Director Paul Renfrow said.
Fredlow, a long-term substitute teacher at Marina, replaces Pete Bonny, who was fired in August.
Fredlow has been an assistant boys’ varsity coach at Marina for five seasons.
