Hamilton Delivers for Tech

Joe Hamilton set up the tying field goal by freshman Luke Manget with five seconds left in regulation, then scored on a six-yard run in overtime as No. 7 Georgia Tech defeated North Carolina, 31-25, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game Saturday at Atlanta.

Hamilton fumbled twice and threw two interceptions, but also completed 14 of 26 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 77 yards in 14 carries.

Georgia Tech needed only four plays to score in overtime, with Phillip Rogers running twice for 11 yards and Hamilton gaining eight yards before his game-winner.

The Yellow Jackets, 4-1 and 2-1 in the ACC, then stopped the Tar Heels (1-4, 0-4) on four downs in their overtime possession.

Duke 24, Virginia 17--Duke forced overtime with a bizarre touchdown pass from one wide receiver to another, and Spencer Romine’s seven-yard pass to Benjamin Watson in the second extra period gave the Blue Devils (1-4, 1-2) an ACC victory over the Cavaliers (3-3, 2-2) at Charlottesville, Va.

After a three-yard run by Thomas Jones gave the Cavaliers a 17-10 lead with 1:24 left, Duke drove to the Virginia nine. Romine pitched to Letavious Wilks, who fumbled, but wideout Scottie Montgomery scooped up the loose ball and heaved it across the field to Richmond Flowers for the tying touchdown with six seconds left.

Both teams missed field-goal attempts in the first overtime, then came Romine’s scoring pass to Watson in the second. Virgina appeared to answer when Dan Ellis passed to Ahmad Hawkins in the corner of the end zone from 25 yards out. However, the catch was ruled out of bounds. Two plays later, Lamar Grant intercepted an Ellis pass to give Duke its first victory at Virginia since 1981.

Maryland 17, Wake Forest 14--Calvin McCall completed both of his passes for 92 yards on two drives that led to 10 points in the final 10 minutes as the Terrapins (4-1, 1-1) came back to beat the Demon Deacons (3-2, 1-2) at Winston-Salem, N.C.

McCall hooked up with running back LaMont Jordon on a 70-yard touchdown that tied the game and Jordan rushed for 39 yards in three carries to set up Brian Kopka’s 19-yard field goal with 3:25 left.

North Carolina State 35, Clemson 31--Jamie Barnette threw four touchdown passes and Rahshon Spikes ran for 104 yards and a touchdown as the Wolfpack (4-2, 1-2) came back from a 14-point, first-quarter deficit to beat the Tigers (2-3, 2-1) at Raleigh, N.C.
