Redlands Wins Aerial Engagement as Chapman Comes Up Short, 48-45
Chapman quarterback Stanley Villanueva passed for a school-record 467 yards, but that wasn’t enough to win a shootout with Redlands’ Danny Ragsdale, as the Panthers fell, 48-45, in a college football game at Chapman Saturday.
Ragsdale completed 28 of 51 for 508 yards and six touchdowns, including a pair to Chad Hustead in the third quarter, when Redlands took charge after the teams played to a 28-28 tie at the half.
Ragsdale also scored the eventual winning points on a two-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Redlands led, 41-31, early in the fourth quarter when Dino Rossi intercepted a Ragsdale pass and returned it 86 yards for a touchdown.
After Ragsdale’s touchdown run, Chapman’s Trent Frisina added a one-yard touchdown run with 3:08 left in the game, but the Panthers never got the ball back.
Villanueva broke the school passing record in the third quarter on a 20-yard pass to Eric Del Conte. The previous record of 344 yards was set by Greg Hyland in 1997 against La Verne. Del Conte caught eight passes for 152 yards, and Marvin Qualls had 10 receptions for 152 yards.
After Ragsdale and Melvin White teamed for two touchdown passes to stake Redlands to a 14-0 lead, the Panthers tied the score by the end of the first quarter.
Del Conte caught a 33-yard pass from Villanueva with 5:52 left to put Chapman on the board. Almost four minutes later, Villanueva scored on a 14-yard keeper.
After the teams traded touchdowns, Villanueva scored on a one-yard run to give Chapman its only lead of the game, 28-21.
But a 24-yard touchdown pass from Ragsdale to Hustead, who had 13 receptions for 248 yards, with over a minute left in the half tied the game. The pair then hooked up for a three-yard score with 5:55 left in the third quarter to give Redlands the lead for good.
