The security guard who berated several Yankee players during Sunday night’s Game 4 delay, in which Red Sox fans littered the Fenway Park field with water bottles and debris, was not disciplined, but a baseball official said the security guard had apologized to the team.
“It was a heat-of-the-battle thing, the security person involved met with the Yankees and apologized, and it was resolved to their satisfaction,” said Kevin Hallanan, baseball’s executive director of security and facilities management. “What happened last night was an aberration. It’s the first time I can recall an umpire pulling teams off the field in Fenway.”
Hallanan said security officers and ushers would have a “greater sensitivity toward alcohol management” for Game 5 on Monday night, “and if we have to cut off alcohol sales, we will. . . . We will have a low tolerance rate for people who disrupt the game.”
Red Sox owner John Harrington issued a statement condemning the behavior of the fans.
“[Sunday] night, a very small group in a crowd of more than 33,000 people behaved outrageously, inappropriately, and uncharacteristically for Red Sox fans,” Harrington said. “As was obvious, this behavior is not tolerated at Fenway Park.
“We are confident the poor behavior of a few will not tarnish the incredible loyalty that millions of fans have shown throughout the thousands of games over the last century.”
