Verdugo Hills had scored only 44 points in six games before defeating Grant, 50-14, in a Sunset Six League game Friday.
Running back Henry Davis did the most damage, rushing for 176 yards and three touchdowns in 19 carries. But Michael Porter, the league’s best linebacker who sometimes plays tight end, lined up in the backfield for the first time and gained 136 yards and a touchdown in nine carries.
Kevin Baird, Luis Danis and Alvin Downs joined the fun, combining for 117 yards in 12 carries as Verdugo Hills (3-4, 1-1) rushed for 426 yards.
Until the offensive explosion against Grant, the Dons were known for defense. They lead City teams in the region in fewest yards allowed with 1,194, 452 fewer than any other team.
Although he mostly handed the ball to his prolific teammates, sophomore quarterback Michael Tinker contributed as well, completing four of seven passes.
It was Tinker’s second start and he is nine of 14 passing. Coach Don Scott tried two other quarterbacks before settling on Tinker.
“He has lots of potential,” Scott said. “He’s a bright kid. I think we’ll go with him the rest of the season.”
