Ventura 24, Valley 21--Paul Czerniak’s 42-yard field goal with 9:12 to play proved the winner for Ventura at Valley.

Valley drove from its 10 to Ventura’s 44, but three consecutive incompletions and an offensive pass interference penalty killed the drive with 1:24 remaining.

Ventura’s inability to run out the clock gave the Monarchs (4-3, 2-2) one last chance.

After Valley used its final timeout with 40 seconds left, defensive back John McPherson stripped the ball from Ventura running back Travis Rogers, giving the Monarchs possession at the Ventura 31 with 29 seconds to play.

But Valley’s Eric Holtfreter was sacked on the next play and threw three consecutive incompletions.

The victory pulled Ventura (6-1, 3-1) into a first-place tie with Moorpark in the division.

Holtfreter completed 19 of 44 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns. Jerome Riley led all receivers with 12 catches for 119 yards and a touchdown.

Czerniak also kicked field goals of 32 and 35 yards, the last one pulling the Pirates to within 14-13 with 6:37 left in the third quarter.

Valley responded with a 39-yard touchdown pass from Holtfreter to J’Von Leong, his third touchdown pass of the game, with 1:31 left in the third quarter.

Rogers, the conference’s leading rusher, gained 143 yards in 32 carries.

Ventura’s touchdowns came on a 15-yard pass from Adrian Maciel to Lee Lewis and a nine-yard run by Pheon Bright.

Bright’s score, with 11:20 left, was followed by a two-point conversion pass from Maciel to Marquis Johnson, tying the score, 21-21.
