FIVE KEY MOMENTS
1. Arizona led at halftime, 20-7, and broke the game open with an eight-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to start the second half. Running back Trung Canidate gained 77 yards in six carries on the drive and capped the possession off with a 19-yard touchdown.
*
2. Arizona utilized a shotgun on offense for the first time after UCLA took a 7-0 lead. Quarterback Keith Smith completed three of five passes from the formation and directed the Wildcats on a 51-yard drive that ended with a 31-yard field goal by Sean Keel.
*
3. Arizona backup fullback Lance Briggs did not carry the ball in the first half, but he ended any hopes UCLA had for a comeback late in the third quarter. On third and one from the UCLA 48, Briggs broke through the middle untouched and outran the Bruin secondary to put the Wildcats ahead, 33-7.
*
4. On its second possession of the first quarter with the game still scoreless, UCLA faced third and 19 from the Arizona 44. Bruin quarterback Cory Paus rolled left and completed a deep right corner pass to Brad Melsby for a 44-yard touchdown to give UCLA a 7-0 lead.
*
5. UCLA took the opening kickoff and easily moved the ball against the Arizona defense, but the Bruins had to settle for a field-goal attempt after the drive stalled at the Wildcats’ five-yard line. Chris Griffith’s 25-yard try, however, was blocked by Peter Hansen, Arizona’s 6-foot-7 backup tight end, to keep the game scoreless.
