An outbreak of mosquito-borne encephalitis has hit New York City, claiming at least one life and making more than 30 others sick, health officials said Saturday.

Workers were spraying insecticide in the city’s Bronx and Queens boroughs where the cases of St. Louis encephalitis have been found. The outbreak marks the first time the deadly viral disease has appeared in the city, Associate Health Commissioner Sandra Mullin said.
