The threat of area code changes has kicked the City Council into action.

The council may direct staff today to send a letter to the Public Utilities Commission in support of leaving the city with the 949 area code. If that is not a possible alternative, it may support a new area code for the entire city.

Councilwoman Cassie DeYoung attended one of the three public hearings last month about area code changes. DeYoung told the panel of phone representatives that the city will fight changes.

The California Public Utilities Commission is considering different plans for area code changes. The changes affect all of south Orange County and may be implemented by April 2002.
