Scoring Question Raised Regarding Cervenka’s Streak

Pitcher Meredith Cervenka of Crescenta Valley High last week extended to 255 her number of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.

Or did she?

Controversy surrounding Cervenka’s streak has been brewing since Crescenta Valley defeated Arcadia, 5-3, in a High Desert Classic tournament game March 25.

Crescenta Valley claims all three of Arcadia’s runs were unearned.

But Arcadia, the home team and therefore the official scorekeeper, asserts that at least one of its runs was earned.

Coach Dan Berry of Crescenta Valley wrote to the Southern Section and is awaiting a response regarding the situation.

If the run is ruled unearned, Cervenka would be 13 innings shy of the state record of 268 set by Lindsay Parker of La Canada from 1993-94.

Meredith Nevard of Camarillo returned to the pitching circle last week, allowing only two hits in 10 innings.

Nevard, the left-handed identical twin of senior Kathryn Nevard, has spent the last month recovering from surgery to remove an ovarian cyst. Last season she had three cysts removed.

Meredith threw a one-hitter and struck out seven in a five-inning, 11-0 victory over Oxnard on Friday. She pitched three innings of one-hit relief in a 2-0 victory over San Diego Scripps on Saturday in the Fountain Valley tournament.

“I feel like I’m back,” Meredith said. “I needed the game against Oxnard to get back into it.”

Camarillo’s 3-1 victory over Garden Grove Pacifica, ranked No. 1 in Division III, last Saturday puts the Scorpions in the semifinals Saturday, when they will play Santa Ana Foothill at 2 p.m at Mile Square Park in Santa Ana.

Camarillo (11-3) will play for the tournament championship or for third place at 6 p.m.

Coach Lynn Baum, whose lineup is without a .300 hitter, was expecting to have slugger Nancy Pabon back in the lineup soon. But he discovered that the outfielder, who batted .352 last season, will probably miss the entire season after she reinjured her calf muscle in physical therapy.
