Math Strike

Re “Math That’s Worth a Hunger Strike,” Commentary, March 31: I don’t want Guillermo Mendieta to suffer, but I taught ninth- and 10th-grade integrated math, and he is making it sound much better than it is and fails to mention the large number of high school teachers who don’t like it.

He is right that students need to be prepared for college math, but he neglects to say that it is the traditional math sequences in high school that prepare students for the traditional math courses still offered in college. When college-level algebra or calculus courses have students weighing wads of bubble gum, then it will be time to get on the integrated math bandwagon.
