Pickup Driver Killed in Slide Down Embankment
A Stanton man was killed Tuesday after losing control of his pickup on the Garden Grove Freeway in Santa Ana, crashing into a guardrail and rolling down an embankment, police said.
Stephen John Rennie, 25, was driving recklessly about 6:20 p.m. when the accident occurred on the transition from the eastbound Garden Grove to the northbound Santa Ana Freeway, said Mark Reeves, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.
After sliding down the embankment, Reeves said, Rennie’s vehicle landed on top of a Lexus traveling about 35 mph on the transition road from the northbound Santa Ana to the westbound Garden Grove Freeway. The truck then flipped over and landed on a guardrail in the embankment.
Rennie, who had to be cut from the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Lexus was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange with moderate injuries, officials said.
