Oscar Wordy
So this year’s Oscar telecast was “the hands-down penultimate in max tack” (Saturday Letters, April 1). Since “penultimate” means “next to last” (not “the height of ultimacy,” as its common misuse would have it), I wonder what the ultimate in “max tack” would be. Oh, wait a minute, I know: people who think “irregardless” is a word.

If you ask 10 people about the Academy Awards show, no doubt you would get 10 different opinions. This past show, however, had one special moment that made the whole four hours worth watching, and about which I have not read anything: When Jane Fonda presented Andrzej Wajda with the special Oscar, she seemed for a moment at a loss how to best show her respect, then curtsied.
Wajda, being European, doubtlessly recognized this as the height of respect. And it seemed so totally heartfelt and honest on Fonda’s part.
