Pierce Gets Even With Canyons, 7-1
Doug Slaten scattered eight hits and struck out eight to help Pierce College pull into a first-place tie with Canyons in the Western State Conference Southern Division by downing the Cougars, 7-1, on Saturday at Canyons.
Pierce took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on back-to-back home runs by Nick Brown and Traviss Hodge.
The Cougars (21-16, 16-8 in conference play) got to within 2-1 with a run in the third, but Kona Sampaio hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning for Pierce (21-15, 16-8).
Glendale 9, Valley 3--Matt Sagoian pitched a seven-hitter and retired 17 consecutive batters in one stretch for the Vaqueros in a WSC Southern Division victory at Glendale.
Sagoian (7-4) struck out three.
Tom Rochin had three hits, including a two-run double, and three runs batted in for Glendale (17-23, 10-14).
Valley is 10-23, 5-19.
Santa Barbara 12, Ventura 11--Lewis Paleck hit a two-run double for the Vaqueros in a WSC Northern Division victory at Santa Barbara.
Jeff Carlson had three hits and scored two runs for Ventura (16-21, 7-17).
Oxnard 10, Hancock 8--Paul McAnaulty had a two-run home run and scored four runs for the Condors in a WSC Northern Division victory at Hancock.
Cal Lutheran 9-14, Occidental 1-1--Nick Plancich and Paul Engel each hit two home runs in a SCIAC sweep at Occidental College.
Cal Lutheran (25-8-2, 19-2) had seven home runs in the two games.
SOFTBALL
Cal State Northridge 4-1, UC Santa Barbara 3-4--Ui Bal singled to drive in the second run in a three-run sixth inning that lifted the Matadors (24-22-1, 14-6) in the first game of a Big West Conference doubleheader at Northridge.
UC San Diego 6-4, Cal Lutheran 0-3--Erin Bridges’ run-scoring double in the ninth gave the Tritons in a nonconference sweep at Cal Lutheran (14-27).
GOLF
* Tim Hogarth of Northridge repeated as champion by seven strokes in the 17th Kelly Cup at Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake.
Hogarth, who will defend his California Amateur Championship in July, shot 69-71--140, even par.
Don Dubois of Coto de Caza was second at 77-70--147.
