Leal’s Goal Carries Waves to 1-0 Victory Over El Paso

The Waves’ goal late in the first half stood up for a 1-0 victory over the El Paso Patriots in an A-League soccer game Saturday in El Paso.

Gustavo Leal took a pass from Jason Boyce and headed the ball past goalie Dimitar Popov in the 35th minute.

Peer Van de Ven had 12 saves for the Waves (3-2).

SOFTBALL

Second-seeded Fullerton will host Grossmont at noon Saturday in the first round of the Southern California community college playoffs.

In the second game at Fullerton College, seventh-seeded Santa Ana plays Bakersfield at 2 p.m. The winners pay at 4 p.m. at Fullerton.

Three-time defending state champion Cypress, seeded fourth, will host Pasadena at noon. College of the Canyons plays Moorpark at 2 p.m. at Cypress. The winners play at 4.
