** (Hed)pe, “Broke,” Jive.
This Huntington Beach outfit offers yet another blend of hard rock and hip-hop, sounding something like gangsta rap with electric guitars. The lyrics on “Broke” (in stores Tuesday) are typically filled with graphic sex and macho moves, as the vocals of Jahred roll from throat-ripping screams to tough raps to real rock crooning. The occasional musical passage rises from the rage and murk, including the clever use of an Earth, Wind & Fire melody on “Crazy Legs.” But new ideas are few. Powerfully performed, but numbing.
