Boy, 14, Killed When Dispute Leads to Gunfire
LONG BEACH — A 14-year-old boy died early Tuesday after he was shot several times during a confrontation between two groups of youths, police reported.
Authorities said Jesse Avelar of Long Beach was mortally wounded late Monday night at West 19th Street and Magnolia Avenue. He was pronounced dead about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday at a hospital.
Investigators said two groups of youths in their teens and early 20s confronted each other and words were exchanged. Someone started shooting into the group of people Avelar was with, striking him repeatedly in the upper body. No one else was injured.
Police suspect that the shooting might be gang-related. Anyone with information about the incident may call the Long Beach Police Department at (562) 570-7244.
