Regarding the Nov. 5 article “La Canada Flintridge Keeps Its Focus on Trails” (Hiking: San Rafael Hills):
The purpose of the fence that writer John McKinney encountered outside Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge is not, as he speculated, “to prevent hikers from entering Descanso without paying the entrance fee,” but rather to preserve unique botanical collections. The fence was installed in 1998 to protect irreplaceable plants, including specimens from Asia and rare historical varieties, from feeding deer.
