RIM Posts Profit

Research In Motion surprised analysts by turning in a profit in the third quarter as sales for its Blackberry wireless e-mail device soared. The Canadian company posted net income of $1.5 million, or 2 cents a share, down 113% from $3.2 million, or 5 cents, a year ago, as expenses nearly doubled. Analysts expected a loss of 1 cent. Revenue surged 160% to $61.6 million. Expenses climbed to $16.9 million from $3.5 million as the company invested in marketing programs for Blackberry and other devices. The company’s shares fell $5.75 at $75 on Nasdaq, before the results were released.
